It’s been just over 2 years since that fateful Wednesday morning. I went into work that day expecting it to be the same as any other, 4 hours later I found myself in my bosses office resigning. And starting an online business there and then. Over the last 24 months I’ve learned a thing or two, and made a decent chunk of cash along the way. So today I wanted to share the 3 bits of advice I rarely see people share, that have had the biggest impact on my own business. 1. Perception is massively underrated. Most people underestimate how important a first impression is. How you dress for a discovery call, whether you have a good camera or a scratchy mic. These things might seem small, but they have a huge impact on how you’re perceived. And as a result, your perceived value, and ability to charge high-ticket prices. 2. You don’t need more leads, you need to learn to close them. Even a trained monkey can get a lead or two if they send enough DMs. But getting those leads on a call, and closing them is another matter. I find it crazy how obsessed people are with lead gen, but then when they jump on a call with their prospect, it’s a complete car crash. The approach I used resulted in roughly 80% close rate in my first year (starting from zero with no results to speak of). Qualify pain points -> presell before call -> sales call becomes nothing more than a vibe check. 3. Networking is where the big money is made You can sign clients with inbound, you can sign clients with outbound. But if you want to sign whales… They come from networking and warm intros. One of my clients is CEO of a $3B NYSE listed company. I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near them without a warm intro. No cold DM, email, or piece of content is going to reach them. That’s why networking (and doing it properly) is so important. Now these things aren’t ‘sexy’ so I don’t see many people talking about them.
